How to Get to Heaven

Getting to know Jesus Christ as your Savior starts with a Realization and ends with a Relationship. God’s desire is that you come to know him personally. He has made “getting saved” so easy; everyone can do it:

Realize that you are a sinner.

This is a first and necessary step. No matter how “good” we are we can never merit Heaven. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

In order to accept God’s gift we must recognize that when we sin (do things against God), that sin separates us from God and has a price that must be paid: Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death;

Realize that there is a penalty for sin.

In order to accept God’s gift, we must recognize that when we sin (do things against God), that sin separates us from God.  And that sin has a price: Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death…

There are two deaths – physical and spiritual.  What is the second death?  The Bible tells us:

Revelation 20:14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.  This is the second death.

Who will experience this death?

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation 21:8

According to these verses, if you were to die today, where would you go – heaven or hell?

Recognize that only Jesus Christ can pay that penalty.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus Christ paid our sin debt and presented it to us as a gift: Romans 6:23b ...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God knew that if we tried to pay for our sins on our own, we would face an eternity in hell.  So God send His Son, Jesus Christ, to be born of a virgin in a manger, to live a sinless life, to die on the cross, and rise again to pay the penalty for our sin.

Turn from your sin and turn to Jesus Christ

…But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23b

No matter how good we try to be, we are still sinners.  Therefore, we cannot earn our way to Heaven.  So God gave us the gift of His Son.  Eternal life cannot be earned.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

You must accept God’s Gift.

Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Though God gives us the gift of eternal life, we must accept His gift before it can do us any good.  We must believe in our heart that we are sinners, that there is a penalty for our sin, and that Jesus Christ the Son of God came to this earth to die on the cross for our sins!  We must put our complete trust in Christ and what He did for us on the cross.  Then we must pray and accept Him as our personal Savior.

Pray

We can’t pray for you, but we can pray with you. A sinner’s prayer might go something like this:
“Lord God, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins. I’m trusting in you, and only you to save me from my sins.  I accept You, Jesus, as my personal Lord and Saviour. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray, Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer, and really meant it, You are saved and WILL go to heaven when you die.  You are now a child of God and will be forever: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. John 10:228
